Choosing an accountant

Bookkeeping and tax-planning needs differ a lot between a sole proprietor and an incorporated business -- match the provider's specialty to your situation.

• Ask whether they hold a CPA designation, and for what specifically that matters versus a bookkeeper without one.
• Ask about their experience with your business structure and industry -- a firm strong with incorporated trades businesses may not be the best fit for a professional corporation.
• Clarify pricing structure (flat monthly fee vs. hourly) and what's included, especially around year-end and tax season.
• Ask how they handle CRA correspondence or audits if that ever comes up.
