Choosing an auto shop

A shop you trust for an oil change isn't automatically the right one for a major repair -- match the shop to the job.

• Ask for a written estimate before work starts, and ask to be called if they find something beyond the original estimate.
• Ask whether they use OEM or aftermarket parts, and whether you have a choice -- this affects both price and warranty.
• Check what warranty applies to both parts and labour, and get it in writing.
• For anything under a manufacturer's warranty, confirm the shop is authorized to do the work without voiding it.
