Choosing a financial services provider

Financial advice touches your whole financial picture -- how someone is paid affects the advice they give.

• Ask directly whether they're fee-only, commission-based, or fee-based, and how that affects what they recommend to you.
• Confirm their registration with the relevant regulator (e.g. CIRO for investment advisors) using the regulator's public register.
• Ask what services are included for their fee and what costs extra.
• Get a clear answer on their typical client profile -- an advisor focused on high-net-worth retirement planning may not be the right fit for someone starting out.
