Choosing a business services provider

Consultants, marketing firms, and other business-service providers vary widely in scope -- get clear on deliverables before you get a quote.

• Ask for a written scope of work, not just a price -- vague engagements are the most common source of billing disputes.
• Ask for references from businesses of a similar size to yours; a firm great for enterprise clients may be a poor fit for a small operation, and vice versa.
• Clarify what happens if the engagement needs to change scope partway through, and how that's billed.
• Ask directly about their experience in your specific industry rather than assuming general experience transfers.
