Choosing a roofer

Roofing work is expensive to redo, so it's worth spending a few extra minutes checking a contractor before you sign anything.

• Ask for proof of WSIB coverage and liability insurance -- in Ontario you can be on the hook for injuries on your own property if a contractor isn't covered.
• Get the quote in writing, itemized for materials, labour, tear-off/disposal, and any permit fees, so you can actually compare two quotes apples to apples.
• Ask what the manufacturer's shingle warranty requires -- some voids if a non-certified installer does the work.
• For anything beyond a straightforward reshingle, check whether a building permit is needed and who's pulling it.
• Ask for two or three local references you can actually call, not just photos.
