Choosing a wedding or event vendor

Event vendors are usually booked well in advance -- and cancellation terms matter more here than almost any other service.

• Get a written contract covering exactly what's included, backup plans (e.g. if a specific photographer is unavailable), and cancellation/refund terms.
• Ask to see a full portfolio or references from an event similar in size and style to yours.
• Confirm deposit amount and payment schedule, and what happens if the event date changes.
• Ask about their contingency plan for illness or emergency on the day itself.
